At Melao, our mission is to share the vibrant flavors and soulful spirit of the Caribbean through fresh, locally sourced food served on the go. About Melao

Joel LeBron, Owner

Our Story

Melao translates to “sweet” in Spanish — and at our core, that’s what we’re all about: bringing the sweet, soulful essence of the Caribbean to the streets through bold, flavorful cuisine.

Founded by Joel LeBron, Melao is deeply rooted in Puerto Rican culture and community. Joel was born in Chicago to a family from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico — a coastal town lovingly known as “Ciudad de Melao Melao.” He lived in Vega Baja as a child, soaking up the flavors, rhythms, and traditions of the island before returning to Chicago, where his passion for Puerto Rican food continued to grow. In 2021, Joel made Ann Arbor, Michigan his home and launched Melao as a way to share the vibrant taste of the Caribbean with his new community.

Melao is more than just a food pop-up — it’s a celebration of heritage, hustle, and heart. From our signature grilled sandwiches on buttery pan sobao bread to house-made sauces, island-style sides, and sweet Caribbean treats, every dish tells a story of tradition and pride.

Wherever we pop up, our mission stays the same: to serve delicious Caribbean-inspired food that feeds the soul and uplifts the communities we’re part of.
